“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: “and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: “and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” (Matt 7:24-27 NKJV)
There is nothing mechanical about the Word of God. Merely sitting under the Word preached will not sanctify you, but what you are called to as Christians is to diligently apply the word to every corner of your life. The Westminster Shorter Catechism describes it as a process“…whereby a sinner, out of a true sense of his sin, and apprehension of the mercy of God in Christ, doth, with grief and hatred of his sin, turn from it unto God, with full purpose of, and endeavor after, new obedience,” (WSC 87).
The Word of God contains everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him, and yet that knowledge is a knowledge that motivates us to action in a certain direction. What Christ calls you to, brothers and sisters, is to build your house upon His foundation. To live a life in accordance with the gospel. To hear the sayings of His and do them! The reason for this is clear, a storm is coming. The storm of God’s righteous judgment on the sins of this world where every work not built upon the foundation of the Lord Jesus Christ will be wiped away in a torrent of destruction.
