Westminster Shorter Catechism Q&A 5

Q. 5. Are there more Gods than one?

                               A. There is but one only, the living and true God.

A little boy being asked, ‘How many Gods are there?’ replied, ‘One.’ ‘How do you know that?’ ‘Because,’ said the boy, ‘there is only room for one, for He fills heaven and earth.’ We might get a chuckle out of the little boy’s answer, but he is absolutely correct.  God is the God of the universe.  He fills heaven and earth. He alone is God. He created the heavens and the earth and sustains them by His power. God declares this through the prophet Isaiah.

“For thus says the LORD, Who created the heavens, Who is God, Who formed the earth and made it, Who has established it. I am the LORD, and there is no other.” Isaiah 45:18 NKJV

Yet the pagans will not acknowledge God as God. They worship the creature rather than the creator who is blessed over all. They worship idols, which are man’s substitute for the true and living God and they serve and worship these idols.

“They have no knowledge, Who carry the wood of their carved image,

And pray to a god that cannot save.” Isaiah 45:20 NKJV

Only the true and living God can forgive sins. The LORD Jehovah is His name.

“Look to Me, and be saved, All you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.” Isaiah 45:22 NKJV

God is zealous for His own glory. He will not share His glory with another.

“I am the LORD, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved images.” Isaiah 42:8 NKJV

“Thus says God the LORD, Who created the heavens and stretched them out,

Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, Who gives breath to the people on it.” Isaiah 42:5 NKJV

To God every knee shall bow and confess that He is Lord, either in this life or in the next. Is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob also your God? Have you looked to Christ, God incarnate, to be saved? There is salvation in no one else. “there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 NKJV
